BERRY BASKET ON A D HANDLE

Dimensions: 5"W x 5"L x 4-1/2"H (8"H to top of hande)

Materials: ½" Flat reed, 3/8" Flat Reed, ½" Flat Oval, #3 Seagrass, 5" x 8" D handle

Preparation: From ½" Flat reed, cut 9 spokes @ 18" long

Soak spokes and 1 strand of ¼" flat for 5 minutes. Mark centers of spokes on rough side of reed with a pencil.

Set the handle vertically with 2 of the 18" spokes on parallel each side, spacing spokes ½" apart.

Weave the remaining 5 spokes horizontally through the vertical spokes, weaving the center horizontal spoke Over the handle spoke, and spacing ½" apart.

True the base to 4-1/4" x 4-1/2".

Weave one retaining row around base with ¼" flat reed, mitering corners, and overlapping weaver across 4 spokes.

Upsett the spokes.

Weave 5 rows of ½" flat reed, Over 1/Under 1, weaving Under the handle spoke.

Alternate the over/under weaving on each row.

Weave 1 row of ½" flat dyed reed, Over 1/Under 1.

Weave 1 row of ½" flat reed, natural.

Weave 1 row of 3/8" flat reed, natural.

Pack down the weavers.

Measure and tuck the inside spokes down under a couple of weaving rows on the inside of the basket.

Cut outside spokes flush with top edge of basket.

Pin one ½" flat rim piece around inside of top row of weaving. Pin one ½" flat oval rim piece around outside of top row of weaving.

Place a piece of seagrass around top edge in between rim rows.

Lash rim with ¼" flat reed, making an "X" at each side of handle.
