MEDIUM MARKET BASKET

Dimensions: 8"W x 12"L

Materials: 5/8" Flat, ½" Flat, 3/8" Flat, ½" Flat Oval, #3 Seagrass, ¼" Flat, 8" x 12" D Handle

Preparation: From 5/8" Flat, cut 10 spokes @ 30" long From 5/8" Flat, cut 7 spokes @ 35" long

Soak spokes in warm water for 5 minutes along with a strand of ¼" flat reed.

Mark spokes at center on rough side of reed.

Lay out the 7 35" spokes horizontally, in approx. 7-3/4" span.

"Weave" the handle by sliding its base Under/Over the ends of the spokes and toward the center marks.

The handle base will be Under the 1st, 3rd, and 5th and 7th spokes; Over the 2nd, 4th, and 6th spokes.

Line up the handle with the center marks.

Working from the center out on each side of handle, weave the 30" spokes vertically.

The first spoke on each side of handle will start Over the first horizontal spoke.

Alternate the weaving until all 10 spokes are woven in (5 on each side of handle.)

Square the base to measure 7-3/4" x 11-3/4".

Weave a retaining row around edge of base with ¼" flat, mitering at corners, and overlapping for 4 spokes.

Upsett spokes.

Weave 7 rows with ½" flat natural reed. First row weaves Under handle.

Weave 3 rows with ½" flat dyed reed.

Weave 3 rows with ½" flat natural reed.

Weave 1 row with 3/8" flat natural reed. Fold outside spokes to the inside of basket, and tuck under a couple of rows of weaving.

Cut inside spokes flush with top of basket.

Pin ½" flat oval reed on inside and outside of top edge of basket, over the top weaver. Shave ends and overlap approx. 4"

Use Seagrass to fill in between the rims.

Lash rim with ¼" flat reed, making an "X" at each side of handle.
